Join us for a moderate/easy hike to Mine Hill Preserve, Mine Hill Road, Roxbury, CT.
Meeting Place: we will carpool from the back parking lot of faith Church by the ball fields - about a 20 minute ride to Roxbury (we should arrive at our destination at 1 pm).
Trail length: 1.5 miles (mostly easy, but if you want to see the caves, there is a short but steep section).
Description: Mine Hill is on the National Register o Historic Places and centers around the mining and processing of iron ore from 1865-1872. Remnants of the roasting ovens and blast furnaces remain with signs detailing the process. The mining tunnels lie beneath, which are very important in that they house bat populations over the winter. Granite was also quarried nearby, with the light gray Roxbury stone used for churches, bridges and fine homes in New York City.
What to bring: Good walking shoes, water and a snack.
Any questions: Call Allison at 203-240-7897 for more details, or if you plan on meeting the group in Roxbury instead of carpooling. Or email us at email@example.com.
Now let's pray for a beautiful day!
